being sad

Colours are amazing. Colours in itself are visually descriptive of emotions and feelings. This is what I discovered in Michael Rosen’s Sad Book. I was at Ipoh two weekends ago for work when I stumbled upon this book at a bookstore. I’ve been looking around for this book and it sure is odd finding it in places you least expect.

A master storyteller and a gifted illustrator is all it takes to tell a great story. Here Michael Rosen talks about himself being sad after his son, Eddie passed away. Quentin Blake uses greys and vivid colours effectively to depict the various moods and settings in the story. The text is minimal and intended for young children to understand that being sad sometimes is an acceptable emotion as with being happy.

I actually love the front cover. The downcast grey tones depict the author shouldering a burden, enwrapped in his own desolate world of sadness.

I’m glad that Michael Rosen chose to share his feelings with a book. Ironically it’s a book to look at when I need some cheering up.
